3 Coordinators for the Peoples’ Social Forum

Location: Ottawa and other locations (to be negotiated)

Term: 9 month contract (40 hours per week)

Start date: ASAP

Salary: $50,000 (prorated for a nine month contract)

Reporting to: Social Forum Steering Committee

Position Summary: Peoples’ Social Forum Coordinator

The position:

The coordinators will help build, promote and roll out the Peoples’ Social Forum (PSF) that will take place in Ottawa on August 21st to August 24th 2014.

The coordinators will work as a team coordinating all aspects of the PSF with external partners (i.e. community groups) and liaise with internal committees such as the Steering Committee, national committees, expansion commissions and national caucuses.

Overview of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative and coordination:

  • Organize and participle in regular in-person meetings and or conference calls including drafting agenda and taking meeting notes

  • Ongoing liaison and communications with various working committees of the PSF at both the local and national level to ensure coordination

  • Maintain the PSF web-site and social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Maintain distribution lists and disseminate information as required, responding to all inquiries and requests

 Logistics:

  • Responsible for planning and rolling out all logistics for the PSF such as (registration of participants, exhibition booths facilities, food, transportation accommodation, venue rentals etc) and other areas as identified by steering committee

  • Responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers to support the PSF

  • Coordinate logistics with local and national partners to supply various requirements for PSF in Ottawa

  • Plan and roll out youth camp during PSF working closely with youth groups

Communication:

  • Develop and roll out local and national communication and media strategies in collaboration with the communication and local committees of the PSF

  • Draft media releases and represent PSF at public events as agreed

  • Liaise with media focusing on alternative forms of media

  • Develop and roll out PSF promotional materials (posters, flyers, etc. with internal commissions and caucuses and the general public)

 Mobilization:

  • Support various expansion commissions, working committees and caucuses to create their own mobilization, strategies that help build the PSF

  • Build and roll out mobilization strategies, in organizations, communities, and sectors that don’t have strong PSF representation

  • Develop and roll out information and popular education sessions regionally and nationally to build participation in the PSF

  • Ongoing campaign-related coordination with organizations, communities, sectors and groups as agreed
  • Coordinate caravans mobilizing across the country that plan to converge in Ottawa with regional groups

Performing other duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge and Skills Sought:

  • Ability to work in a team and under pressure
  • Experience working with First Nations of Canada and have a sound understanding of First Nations protocols (local and international)
  • Able to work with First Nations Elders
  • 1-3 year’s experience fundraising; including funding applications and on line campaigns
  • Comfortable dealing with the media and making public presentations
  • Proven track record working with marginalized communities
  • 1-3 years’ experience working with local and national networks and community based grassroots movements
  • Fluent in both French or English (spoken and written)
  • Experience with (MS project, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop and WordPress) Element and In Design an asset
  • 1-3 year’s experience coordinating and rolling large conferences or events
  • Availability to work certain evenings and weekends
  • Experience recruiting and coordinating volunteers
  • Experience tracking and managing project budgets
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to be flexible
